['ʃenstən], William, englischer Dichter, * Halesowen 13. 11. 1714, ✝ ebenda 11. 2. 1763; studierte zusammen mit S. Johnson, war befreundet mit vielen Dichtern seiner Zeit; schrieb v. a. pastorale Lyrik von zum Teil vorromantischer Schlichtheit. Bekannt wurde seine humorvolle autobiographische Dichtung »The schoolmistress« (1742). Er unterstützte R. Dodsley bei der Edition der »Collection of poems by several hands« (6 Bände, 1748-70) sowie Bischof T. Percy bei der Herausgabe der »Reliques of ancient English poetry« (3 Bände, 1765). Ab 1743 wandelte er sein Gut Leasowes in einen der ersten Landschaftsgärten um.
